Other Confederate Soldiers

In our search to document soldiers of the 23rd Virginia, we have come across images of other soldiers who served in other units and whose images are, to our knowledge, unpublished. To preserve the story of these men for all time, we have posted their photographs to our site. May they never be forgotten.


 

Captain Frank V. Winston

Captain, 13th Virginia Infantry

Charles Paine Hansell

Pvt. 20th Battalion GA Cavalry

 

Fought at Charleston, South Carolina and Trevilion Station, Virginia.

General Clayton G. Coleman

 

General Clayton G. Coleman 1807-1872, Louisa County, Va. Justice, Member State Legislature, Confederate soldier.  His son Clayton G. Coleman Jr. served in 23rd Virginia.  It is presumed that his rank of general was in the Virginia Militia by the uniform and the fact that he is not listed in Generals In Gray.

 

 

John McHaney Stone,

Pvt. Co. F, 38th Virginia Infantry

 

Born 6/4/44. Enlisted Republican Grove, Halifax County, Virginia  6/4/61. Present until sent to hospital 6/22/62 from accidental wound. Returned to duty. Detailed litter bearer prior to 7/1/63. According to  Nothing But Glory, he was at Gettysburg detailed as litter bearer in Ambulance Corps in Pickett's Charge. Present until detailed teamster for brigade prior to 12/31/64. Still absent as of 2/25/65. Assigned light work with brigade. Paroled 4/9/65 at Appomattox. Died 8/12/26 in Halifax County, Virginia.  John was born and died in the same house. His house was located near Cody, Virginia in Halifax County on the road between Straight Stone and Cody.

 

 

Paul Epperson

and wife Henrietta Taylor,

Pvt. Co. F, 38th Virginia Infantry

 

Born 7/16/30. Enlisted 3/14/62 at Republican Grove, Halifax County, Virginia. Left wife and 3-year old son, John Edward, at home. Admitted Chimborazo Hospital 4/17/62. WIA (slightly) Malvern Hill 7/1/62 and admitted to Richmond Hospital 7/3/62. Admitted Chimborazo Hospital 3/10/65 with chronic diarrhea. Died 7/31/08. Buried in family cemetery on Rt. 647 (Tobacco Road) 2 miles east of Republican Grove.  

 

 

Sidney Strother

Sgt., Ellett's Co. Light Artillery

(Crenshaw's Battery), ANV

 

Born in Richmond, Virginia. Enlisted in Crenshaw's Battery for 3 years or war March 14, 1862, in Richmond. Seriously wounded by shell and mini ball June 27, 1862, at the Battle of Cold Harbor (Gaines Mill). Died that night at his home in Richmond.  His father, W. P. Strother, received $85 in 1863 from the Confederate government. Buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond.

 

Cornelius Wimer and wife Susan Catherine Waybright

Pvt. Co. C, 14th Virginia Cavalry

 

Born 10/22/39. Enlisted as sergeant at Monterey, Highland County, Virginia August 1, 1861, at age 22, in Company B, 162 Regiment Virginia Militia. Enlisted as private at Churchville, Augusta County, Virginia May 15, 1862, in 14th Virginia Cavalry. Present 9/62 through 2/63. Present 3 and 4/63. Present 2 through 8/64. AWOL 9/24/64. Present November and December 1864.  Died 11/19/26 in Blue Grass, Highland County, Virginia. Buried in Cemetery there.

Emma C. "Emily" Shelton and

Daniel S. "Joe" Chaney

Cpl. Co. C, 38th Virginia Infantry

 

Born 9/20/36. Enlisted 5/30/61 at Laurel Grove, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Present until wounded in action with gunshot flesh wound in leg at Seven Pines (according to CSR but was probably Malvern Hill) 7/1/62 and admitted 7/3/62 to Chimborazo Hospital. Promoted to 3rd Corporal prior to 4/1/64 but was back to private by 8/15/64. Family history says he was in Pickett's Charge, as documented in Nothing But Glory. They were married 12/19/67 in Pittsylvania County. His brother Beverly Wroe Chaney also served in Co. C, enlisting about age 19 in 10/64 and present until at least 2/65.

John Henry Morris

Pvt. Co. C, 14th Virginia Infantry

Fluvanna Rifle Guard

 

Born 1844 in Fluvanna County, Virginia. Son of William Nelson Morris & Susan J. Lowry. Morris enlisted in Richmond 3/27/62.
Absent "unarmed and undrilled" at Suffolk until joined company 4/10/62.
Admitted Williamsburg Episcopal Church Hospital 5/18/62 and Petersburg Hospital 5/28/62. No record 7-8/62. AWOL 10/30/62 through 1-2/63.  Present 3-4/63 until deserted near Culpeper Courthouse 7/26/63.  Was present in Armistead’s Brigade in Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg, as mentioned in relative's letters and listed in Nothing But Glory. Arrested and confined at Castle Thunder 1/64.  Admitted Richmond General Hospital with pneumonia 3/8/64.  At Richmond General Hospital with chronic bronchitis 4/13/64. Returned to Castle Thunder 5/3/64. Present 7-10/1864.  Admitted Chimborazo Hospital with pleuritis 11/12/1864 and transferred to Fluvanna County by order of the Surgeon General.  Carried on company clothing list 11/30/1864 and 12/31/1864.  Paroled Columbia, VA 5/65. Married Mary Elizabeth Desper 12/24/1867 and fathered 10 children.
Was a "jack of all trades": pulled teeth, vet, carpenter, barber, wheelwright, blacksmith. Died Louisa 10/18/15.

 

Phillip Beverly Brinkley

Lt. Co. I, 41st Virginia Infantry

Phillip and several of his brothers, sons of Abram Brinkley and Nancy Knight, joined Co. I "Cypress Sharpshooters" in 1861. He served throughout the war. Cypress Chapel, as the area of his enlistment is known, is on the edge of the Great Dismal Swamp in Nansemond County (now City of Suffolk), VA. Photo ca. 1900.

Alexander Lawrence

Pvt. Co. A, 24th Virginia Cavalry

 

Alexander Lawrence was born May 25, 1835 at his family's farm "Scotiana" in Henrico County, Va. He enlisted March 19, 1862, along with a brother in Wren's Cavalry (2 Co.'s), which became Co.'s A and B under First Lt. B. W. Green.  When the final roll call was made at Appomattox, only 26 men from the original 312 officers and men of Wren's original two companies were present. Surrendered at Appomattox. Some of the land he had inherited from his father he donated to Mount Vernon Baptist Church  in 1875. 
He became a member of the Robert E. Lee Camp No. 1 of The United Confederate Veterans and was present at the May 29, 1890, unveiling of the new Lee Monument. Alexander
died October 6, 1895, at 404 Kinney St in Richmond.
Buried Hollywood Cemetery then moved to  Riverview Cemetery in Richmond.

Louisa Holiday Guards
 

Born 1838 in Louisa County. Enlisted 2/64 at Chaffin's Farm. Admitted Richmond Hospital 6/17/64 age 26 with gunshot wound of the left hip. Furloughed for 60 days 6/28/64. Farmer. Paroled 5/15/65. Applied for pension 4/9/88 at age 51. Disabled due to gunshot wound received at Chester Station 6/16/64. $15 approved. Buried 2 miles west of Ferncliff, off Rt. 250, Butler/Harlow Family Cemetery. On the 1888 pension roll from Louisa County his $24.00 funeral expenses are shown as paid by The State of Virginia.
 

 

 

Patrick Henry Sipe and

wife Lavina Frances Goode

  Pvt. Co. C, 6th Virginia Cavalry and later Co. B, 23rd Virginia Cavalry (ca. 1921)

 

Born Port Republic, VA 4/16/46. Married Lavina Good of Rockingham Co., VA 4/17/66. Fathered 5 sons and 6 daughters. Enlisted in 1861 at age 15. According to his obituary he participated in "..most of the notable engagements, with one exception, that of the Battle of Gettysburg, his horse having been shot beneath him before he reached the battlefield". Moved his family to the vicinity of Dayton, Ohio in 1878. Died 1/16/23. Buried Parish Cemetery in Clay Township, Montgomery County, Ohio.

Enlisted at Richmond 2/2/63, age 17. Son of Thomas F. Robertson and Frances Ann Bowles of Perkinsville, Goochland Co., VA.
